Dr. Cunliffe -- Investigator
Adventures of a psychic detective
Most collectors of supernatural short
fiction would probably agree that this title belongs in the top
ten of legendary rarities. As a narration of the adventures of
a psychic detective, it is sought after by aficionados of
mystery as well as supernatural fiction. Few have ever seen it.
It has never been reprinted, nor have any of its stories
been anthologized, according to Ashley and Contento's Supernatural Index.
Nothing else was published by this author and almost nothing is
known of his identity. Bleiler speculates (in Science Fiction: The Early Years) that the stories may have appeared first in
periodicals, but we think it more likely that this book, coming
as it did from a vanity publisher, represents their only public
appearance. The stories have a pulpy flavor. In them we find
mad scientists, disintegrating rays, monsters from outer space,
a snake-woman and a vampire. Their literary polish is not
always as glossy as some might like it to be. But in the case
of a text and author so obscure, working with a motif as
popular as the psychic detective, we feel justified in
reprinting it so that others can arrive at their own judgments.
The cream of the Carnacki and John Silence stories will not
feel challenged by these tales, but they may welcome their
publication nonetheless as a re-union with distant, long-lost
relations.
