Olmsted's plan for the Emerald Necklace envisioned connecting the string of Boston parks that now terminate in Franklin Park in Dorchester and Forest Hills with a tree lined boulevard that would bring the green belt back to the ocean at Pleasure Bay in South Boston, the finale of the necklace. The boulevard was never realized but Pleasure bay was built though not fully realized in the elegant Horseshoe form that he envisioned. In that era Castle Island and Fort Independence was truly an island and part of the bay had to be filled to connect the island to the mainland. This view renders the long elegant curve of Pleasure Bay Beach, once again a swimming beach after the Boston Harbor cleanup.
